Move - That mantra will usually do just fine. Sometimes we move in the right direction and make great decisions. Sometimes we move in the other direction and are forced to pivot but we don’t stop moving. During a hundred mile footrace 30 more miles is a lot and it’s difficult to see the end but if you just keep moving you’ll eventually get there. It’s not about the speed or the destination. Instead it’s about the journey. Move.

Help others - When I got a job at Life Time Fitness in 2009 the first thing the onboarding instructor asked us was “why do you want to be a personal trainer?” Someone answered “to help others”. He shot it down right away. It was all about making money. My life had changed for the better leading up to that moment and I was excited to help others. Money is nice and we need it to live and it’s become more of a motivation for me to make money but not at the expense of helping others. They can and in my opinion should go together. Help others.

I turned on the mic and went rogue. Not really. I just turned on the mic and talked a bit about what was on my mind. This would be a good one to check out if you haven't ever listened before.
Work - Just a few weeks ago I got a job doing manual labor. It had been decades since I’d done work like that and my body did not respond well. After just four days I ended up with a bulging disc in my back and left that job. As a stay at home Dad working marketing and finance from home part time I hadn’t had a full time job since probably 2012 and it was an eye opener for me. I learned I still knew how to work hard. I was also reminded that work takes time and energy. The work I choose to do now is different from manual labor. I feel like I’ve got unique skills and experiences to help people establish healthy habits in their lives, specifically business executives who may need to get creative about how they fit it all in. You’ve got unique skills and experiences you can use too. I figured I can either just go to work trading time for money, which isn’t bad, or I can spend my time and energy doing something I enjoy and feel I’m good at. If I give the same amount of time and energy to that work as I did to manual labor I figure things will work out just fine. Work.

Be Self Confident - This is one I have to work through every single day and I know I’m not alone. It means so much to me when someone takes the time to encourage and build confidence in me. I know though, that I’ve got to have confidence in myself in order to reach the goals I have for myself, my family and my business. How we talk to ourselves about ourselves plays a big role in developing more self confidence. Lately I have been reframing those conversations telling myself I am good enough, I am qualified, I can do it. Anything else just isn’t true. Find a way to recognize the conversation you’re having with yourself and make sure it builds you up. Be self confident.

Meditation has become an important part of my life. I never would have thought growing up that I would meditate regularly when I got older. Meditation has provided a way for me to be more aware of the conversations I’ve been having with myself for years, decades really. As I’m able to recognize the thoughts running through my head I’m more able to filter out the ones that serve me from the ones that don’t. Meditation helps calm me down and keep me moving in a good direction. A couple of apps that have helped me that provide guided meditations are Calm and Peloton. Meditation.

Do the right thing - I don’t know what the right thing for you is at this moment but there is never a bad time to do the right thing. The right thing might look different to you than it does to me and if presented the same situation tomorrow the right thing might be different than it is today. Do the right thing.

Be Genuine - As we build our lives it’s easy to get sucked into the trap of changing who we appear to be to appease others. The problem with that is we never really know who we’re supposed to be in any given situation. Maybe it’s something I’ve come to realize as I’ve gotten older but it just doesn’t serve anyone to be anything other than genuine. Build what you build being who you are. It’s much easier and you’ll be so much happier along the way. Be genuine.

Have courage - What does courage mean to you? Courage can show up in many different ways. Have the courage to fail. Have the courage to succeed. Have the courage to stick to that nutrition plan. Have the courage to say no to that drink. Have the courage to have that conversation. Have the courage to say yes even if you don’t know where it will lead. Have courage to say no. Have the courage to get out of bed. Have the courage to ask for the sale. Have the courage to close the deal. Have the courage for so much more. Where could you have more courage? Have courage.

The nice thing about preparing to be your best is that once the lights hit and the moment is upon you all you need to do is trust your preparation. There is an incredible amount of freedom and confidence that comes with being prepared. Once the work has been done and it’s time to perform the mind can relax and perform in rhythm. It’s too late to prepare once the gun goes off or the whistle blows or the speech starts or the board meeting is underway. Then, it’ll be obvious who is trying to prepare on the fly and who is trusting their preparation. Trust your preparation.
